From My Own Wedding to Yours: Why I fell in love with Wedding Photography
This year, my wife and I celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary. Each year, as we look through our wedding photos, I’m reminded of why I became a wedding photographer. These images, captured by the amazing Chip Litherland, hold a special place in my heart and inspire my work.
Our wedding day in Old Saybrook, CT, was a whirlwind of excitement and emotion. It flew by, just as everyone warned us it would. But the photos bring it all back—the joy, the love, the unforgettable moments. They let us relive our special day, preserving memories that might otherwise fade.
A Feeling Preserved Does Not Fade Away
Wedding photography isn’t just about pretty pictures or ticking off a shot list. It’s about your unique story – a story of love, commitment, and the joining of two lives. Memories naturally fade over time, no matter how much we think we’ll remember every detail. Faces blur, voices become distant, and moments slip away. For us, our photos keep the memories alive, allowing us to revisit those cherished moments again and again.
I often think back to a particular moment from our wedding – right around sunset, we went down to the beach with our wedding party. It was a brief escape from the hustle and bustle of the reception. As the sun set and the sky turned vibrant with color, we shared a quiet walk alone, away from the crowd. That moment encapsulated the day for me. We were married. This was it. This was everything.
A Moment Frozen in Time Breathes Life into Your Memories
Another photo that holds immense meaning to me is one of my mom, taken while we were waiting for the ceremony to start. She was in remission from ovarian cancer at the time and, sadly we lost her four years later.
Every time I think of her, it’s that photo I see. Her smile, her love—it’s all there in that single frame. It’s a memory I cherish deeply, one that keeps her spirit alive for me.
This is what I want for the couples I work with. I want to create those “This is it” moments, the ones that hold all the emotions and connections of the day.
The Power of Photographs in Preserving Love and Connection
It’s an incredible privilege to be part of someone’s special day and to give them something they can hold onto forever. That’s why I do what I do. I want to preserve those powerful, meaningful moments for others, just like the photo of my mom means the world to me. It’s a beautiful gift to share these emotions through my work, and it’s what drives me to continue doing what I love.
Advice for Couples Planning Their Wedding
For those immersed in wedding planning, here’s my advice: embrace the unpredictability. Things may not go as planned, but what truly matters is the love between you and your partner. Cherish the presence of loved ones and the memories you create together—these are the real treasures that endure.
While striving for perfection is natural, allow yourselves to be present in the moment. Trust the professionals you’ve hired, let them handle the details, and free yourselves from unnecessary stress. Embrace the imperfections—they often hold genuine beauty.
As I reflect on my journey as a wedding photographer and our own wedding anniversary, I am reminded of the countless love stories I’ve had the privilege of documenting. Each wedding is unique and beautiful, and through photography, I am blessed to play a part in preserving these narratives for generations to come.
