A Spring Day at Gillette Castle

The April afternoon couldn’t have been more perfect for Steve and Allie’s session. Early blooms dotted the landscape as we explored the grounds. The castle itself, built by actor William Gillette, offered a mix of rugged stone walls and artistic touches that made each photo unique.
The couple strolled hand-in-hand along the winding paths, stopping to take in views of the Connecticut River below. Each corner of this East Haddam landmark gave us new opportunities for beautiful engagement photographs.

4 Tips for Planning Your Own Gillette Castle Engagement Session

Want to capture your own love story at this East Haddam gem? Here’s how to make the most of your Gillette Castle State Park engagement photographs:

1. Time Your Visit Right

The park gets busy on weekends and holidays. Consider a weekday session, or arrive early in the morning for fewer crowds. Steve and Allie’s April session hit the sweet spot with spring colors but before peak tourist season.

2. Wear Clothing That Complements the Setting

Steve and Allie chose outfits that worked with the castle’s stone tones:

  • Soft, flowing fabrics that move in the breeze
  • Colors that stand out against stone (blues, greens, burgundy)
  • Comfortable shoes for walking the grounds

3. Plan for Multiple Locations

The park offers many photo spots:

  • The castle exterior
  • Walking trails
  • River viewpoints
  • Stone staircases

4. Watch the Weather

Connecticut weather can change quickly. Have a backup date in mind, or bring layers that can be added or removed as needed.

Parking and access to the grounds are free. But there are fees for admission inside the castle itself.

Interior photography is allowed when the castle is open to visitors (typically May through October), but tripods and professional lighting equipment may be restricted.

Plan for 1-2 hours to fully explore the various settings the park offers for your East Haddam engagement photographs.

The castle itself offers some covered areas, but we can always reschedule if the forecast looks too wet for comfortable outdoor photos.
